How the term Goat Locker got it’s name: Long before modern ships, sailors traveling long distances kept goats aboard their ships. They were a source of comfort, and would eat nearly anything, including garbage, and in return would provide milk and butter. Chief Petty Officers were given the same sleeping quarters as the goats, and this became an area of escape from other crew and officers alike to relax and have grog. Hence the name The Goat Locker.
